Shooting in Goa is a dream for many videographers and filmmakers. Beyond the picturesque streets lined with coconut trees and the never-ending coastal sunsets, Goa's vibrant music festival culture plays a pivotal role. Goa is widely celebrated as the birthplace of psytrance, a genre that has evolved into a vibrant subculture with a global following. The idyllic beaches and laid-back lifestyle of Goa have historically attracted musicians and artists, turning it into a hub for the psychedelic community. This unique environment has fostered the growth of psytrance music, which combines high-tempo beats with intricate electronic sounds to create an immersive auditory experience
In the heart of Goa, Hilltop stands as a sacred space for the psychedelic community. Often referred to as a temple, Hilltop Goa is more than just a venue; it’s a spiritual and cultural epicenter for psytrance enthusiasts. Located in Vagator, Hilltop has been an iconic party destination since the 1970s, known for its electrifying atmosphere and vibrant décor. The venue is surrounded by palm trees and adorned with neon lights, creating a visually stunning environment that complements the high-energy music
This year, our team had the privilege of filming at the Cosmic Spirit Festival at Hilltop Goa for the "Hitech Saga Edition 1" documentary. The festival is a testament to the thriving Hitech psytrance culture in Goa, featuring an eclectic lineup of artists and a plethora of activities designed to engage and inspire attendees. We had the extraordinary opportunity to connect with Gaddafi Malik, the visionary behind some of India's largest festivals. Gaddafi, hailing from Thirunelveli, has successfully curated four major festivals, bringing top-notch international and local artists to Goa. His philosophy that music can foster world peace resonates deeply with us, and his dedication to the psytrance community is truly inspiring. Hilltop Goa, especially during the Cosmic Spirit Festival, is more than just a music venue. It’s a holistic experience where art, culture, and spirituality converge. The festival attracts a global community of psytrance enthusiasts who come together to celebrate life, music, and connection. This year’s edition featured an eclectic lineup and various activities, from wellness workshops to artistic performances, all aimed at fostering a sense of community and personal growth.
Our time in Goa was an incredible journey, filled with the hustle and bustle of festival life. The backstage was a whirlwind of activity, with artists preparing for their sets and crew members ensuring everything ran smoothly. Our time in Goa was not just about filming; it was about experiencing and documenting the rich cultural tapestry that defines the Hitech community. The backstage hustle, the artists' dedication, and the attendees' unbridled enthusiasm all contributed to a truly memorable experience.
As we return to the editing table with gigabytes of footage, we are filled with excitement to share the visual treat that is the "Hitech Saga Edition 1" documentary. This project is a love letter to our friends and the vibrant Hitech Psytrance community, showcasing the magic that unfolds at these festivals and the tireless efforts of those behind the scenes to make it all happen.
Stay tuned for more updates on our journey and the upcoming release of the documentary!
Newsletter: Europe - End of Summer Season
As the summer season in Europe comes to a close, it's time to reflect on the wonderful and peaceful weather that made it perfect for shooting and exploring. The vibrant and inspiring interactions with artists from around the globe, all gathered in one room, created an unforgettable experience.
Capturing the Essence of Kulasekarapattinam
The documentary, born from a 2017 photography expedition by our producer, Abinandhan Sundararajan, captures the festival in its raw and unfiltered nature. This project faced numerous challenges, from the inability to stay in contact due to a lack of network, to enduring the scorching sun and navigating through the dense festival crowds. Our three-man army was often lost, but more so, they were captivated by the magnificence of the Dusshera celebrations.
